I know everyone reading this who has been lucky enough to attend EAA’s annual convention and aviation family reunion each summer in Oshkosh knows this drill: You are trying to explain “Oshkosh” to another pilot who has never attended the show, and cannot find the words to aptly describe the sheer size and spectacle of this incredible week-long event. And when you try explaining it to a non-pilot, their eyes glaze over when you get excited telling them about the acres of airplanes, the warm camaraderie of hanging out with 600,000 of your closest like-minded #avgeek friends, or about seeing 22 Beech Staggerwings parked wingtip to wingtip. “You won’t believe the Globe Swifts,” you tell them, “must have been 50 of them!” Of course, they look at you like you just arrived from Mars, not knowing a Globe Swift from a United triple seven.
Well now, Airplanista is giving you the golden opportunity to put your thoughts about EAA AirVenture Oshkosh into words with our new “For the Love of OSH” Essay Competition – which will be the focal point of my annual #Oshbash Social Media Meetup event at the show. For anyone who has been to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, it is indeed beyond words, but I am confident that a lot of people in the aviation community will be able to describe their passion for this wonderful celebration of all that is good with aviation in a very good essay.

Everyone 16 years of age or older is eligible to enter their essay in the competition as long as the rules found here are followed. Submissions open June 1, 2019 and there is a limit of just 100 entries, so interested authors will need to jump on this if they want to get their entry in for judging before the submission window closes July 5, 2019 at midnight (Pacific time).

This is not only a fun way to help EAA celebrate their 50th year of holding their annual convention in Oshkosh, it is also a way for several essay authors to win some really great prizes and awards. Airplanista is elated to have the support of some of aviation’s finest companies sponsoring the competition, and all have donated something special. The winners will be announced at #Oshbash on Tuesday night, July 23rd, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the EAA Media HQ Press Tent.
Let’s take a quick look at the companies who are supporting the “For the Love of OSH” essay competition:

The Grand Prize, First and Second place winners will take home a beautiful "art glass sculpture" award sponsored by pilot Rick Cordary of Edco Awards and Specialties.
Foreflight is a big supporter, and has donated the grand prize of a $499 Sentry ADS-B receiver unit and a one-year subscription to their top service, the Performance Plus package, a $299 value. That grand prize winner will also receive a pair of the super cool headset-friendly sunglasses from Flying Eyes Optics valued at $199, and a gorgeous “art glass” sculpture award from Edco Awards and Specialties.
The winner of the Aircraft Spruce and Specialty First Place Award will leave #Oshbash with a $500 gift card good for anything Aircraft Spruce sells, plus a pair of Flying Eyes sunglasses and their own art glass sculpture award.
Sporty’s Pilot Shop is sponsoring the Second Place Award, with the winner receiving a Sporty’s Air Scan radio ($139 value), the Flying Eyes sunglasses, and one of the Edco art glass sculpture awards.
X-Plane 11 is the sponsor of the Third and Fourth Place Awards, with each winner taking home a full X-Plane 11 product key (valued at $60) and a $130 joystick controller to use with the flight simulator. Each of these winners will also walk out with some X-Plane 11 swag such as shirts, hats etc.
And last, Airplanista will give the two “Honorable Mention” winners a $30 gift card each to use on the grounds in the EAA AirVenture store. That’s one nice t-shirt, a couple of coffee mugs, maybe 10 AirVenture key fobs, or 12 bags of Skittles and a 16-oz Mountain Dew. The gift card is just a fun way for this blog to say “thanks for paying along.”

I know you have a lot to say about EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, and am hopeful the list of great prizes and awards above will motivate you to put those words to good use. All the info you need to know to learn about the competition - including the rules and how to submit an essay - and also about #Oshbash can be found at
So pull that dusty old Royal typewriter out of the basement closet (or just use your computer), and get cracking on crafting your best 500 to 1,000-word story of what this insanely fun show means to you. After the essays are scored, you might just leave #Oshbash with an armload of valuable aviation goodies.

Even if you do not submit an essay, come to the announcement event on Tuesday night in the Media HQ Press tent and chow down on some Pork Barrel BBQ Bacon Jerky (sponsored again by John Zimmerman of Sporty’s Pilot Shop) and chat up some of the people you know from aviation social media. #Oshbash has become a “must attend” part of AirVenture for many avgeeks, and I hope to see you there.
